Best Maui Beaches for Sunset Couples & Maternity Photos

Once you inquire with me as your Maui photographer, I’ll send over a very detailed location guide that walks you through all of my favorite Maui beaches for couples, family, and maternity sessions. It includes the overall vibe of each location, sunset timing, accessibility, nearby resorts, and helps you choose the spot that best fits your vision.

One of the biggest questions my clients ask when planning their Maui session is which beach is best for sunset photos. The truth is, Maui has so many beautiful options, but a few locations consistently stand out depending on which side of the island you’re staying on.

For couples, babymoon, and maternity sessions, I always recommend choosing a location that not only photographs beautifully, but also matches the overall feel you want—whether that’s soft and romantic, tropical, dramatic, or dreamy with lava rocks.

These are my personal favorite sunset locations on both the south side and west side of Maui.

My Favorite South Maui Beaches

Maluaka Beach

Maluaka is one of my favorite beaches on the south side for couples and babymoon sessions. It has such a peaceful, tropical feel with beautiful sandy shoreline, soft light at sunset, and plenty of space to create romantic images.

I especially love this location for couples who want a more relaxed beach vibe with gorgeous ocean views and a little more privacy. The sunsets here are often so soft and glowy, which is perfect for that dreamy Maui look.

This beach is also a great option for maternity sessions because the walking is easy and the beach has a very calm, elegant feel. One of my favorite parts of Maluaka is the beautiful grassy field overlooking the ocean, which adds so much variety and gives your gallery a soft, romantic Maui feel beyond just the beach itself.

Po’olenalena Beach

Po’olenalena is another south side favorite and one of the most popular choices for maternity and couples photos. What makes it so special is the combination of sandy beach, golden sunset light, and the beautiful lava rocks that add so much variety to a gallery.

This location feels incredibly romantic and timeless. It’s especially stunning for babymoon photos with flowy dresses and soft neutral tones.

I love recommending Po’olenalena clients because it offers such a beautiful mix of classic beach portraits and dramatic Maui scenery.

My Favorite West Maui Beaches

Ironwoods

For the west side, Ironwoods is perfect for couples who want something a little more dramatic and adventurous. The cliffs and ocean backdrops create such a romantic feel.

This beach is incredible at sunset, especially for couples who love a more cinematic look to their photos. The scenery feels emotional, which makes it one of my favorite locations for intimate couples sessions.

Kapalua Bay

Kapalua Bay is one of the most iconic sunset spots on the west side of Maui. It has stunning golden light, calm water, and gorgeous palm-lined views that make every gallery feel luxurious and romantic.

I especially love this location for couples staying in Kapalua or nearby resorts who want something elegant, calm, and classic Maui.

The sunsets here can be absolutely incredible, and it’s a beautiful choice for both couples and babymoon and family sessions.

Choosing the Best Maui Beach for Your Session

The best beach really depends on the style you love most.

  • Maluaka: tropical, soft, romantic

  • Po’olenalena: dreamy sunset + lava rocks

  • Ironwoods: dramatic cliffs and adventurous feel

  • Kapalua Bay: classic luxury Maui sunset

Whether you’re planning a couples getaway, honeymoon, family, or maternity session, choosing the right beach helps create photos that feel true to your story.

If you’re not sure which location fits your vision best, I’m always happy to help guide you based on where you’re staying, the sunset, tides, and the overall look you want for your photos.
